Porsche Cayman S Design Edition 1 to be built in lucky number volume

Special edition cars tend to be either really cool or really boring. We see examples of limited-production models that fail to inspire that exclusivity-seeking impulse all of the time. Buyers simply glaze over them and move one, as these cars often include unique cosmetic attributes but little in the way of performance, utility or comfort.

But the upcoming Porsche Cayman S Design Edition 1, despite being defined primarily by subtle non-mechanical upgrades, defies the conventional wisdom: this is one sweet one-off. Well, nearly; Porsche is building a slot-machine-winning 777 units. All arrive in a black-on-black configuration.

On the outside, 19-inch wheels and tires from the 911 Turbo have been applied with five-millimeter spacers, and the suspension has been dropped 10 mm. Inside, black Alcantara has been applied to the upholstery, steering wheel, gearshift, handbrake and roof. Porsche logos are embossed in the seats, and the instrument cluster has been updated. A special individually-numbered plaque on the glove box lid identifies each Design Edition 1.

More cool equipment is provided, as Porsche includes a black briefcase filled with goodies. A pocket knife, chronograph, sunglasses, pen and key ring are all inside, and of course, are all black (Porsche emphasizes that even the knife blade is black in color). The car launches in Germany this November and hits U.S. shores in January 2008.
